Is this real life?

I have had Port of Shadows and Wet Hot American Summer sitting by my DVD player since September.  Netflix has been charging me $14.00 a month, faithfully, every month since I got them.  Carry the two… that’s, $70.00!  To let two movies sit beside my DVD player.  I’m a money managing genius!

Granted, Seth and I don’t go to movies, so it’s not like we’re wildly spending money willy nilly on films while those two sad selections sit at home.  (His dad gets the Academy screeners, so I’ve seen almost everything out now, my favorites are either Vicky Christina Barcelona or The Reader.) Right now I’m just sort of holding on to them for the sheer personal torture it affords me to think about how I have had them for 5 months and haven’t watched them.  It’s a thing.

But now that I’ve seen the video below, it’s the only thing I want to watch.  Over and over.  (via Sundry)

“I’m voting for Hillary not because she’s a woman—but because I am”

My mom sent me an essay this morning that perfectly sums up my feelings on the media today. Please have a read.

Goodbye to All That (#2) by Robin Morgan

I support Hillary Clinton. I have heard all of the reasons why you don’t. Spare me your hope. Spare me your worries about her electability. Spare me your concerns about her being part of the political machine. Think about why you really don’t like her. And then wonder why you have to want to hang out with your President in order to vote for her.

From the Reading List

From my reading list, but I loved it so much I don’t want you to miss it.

Triangle by Katharine Weber (12/13/07) I had this at the bottom of the pile to read when I got around to it, thinking the library would let me re-new it indefinitely, because I had never heard of it, I couldn’t imagine any one else would request it. Then on Monday, I got an e-mail from the library saying I better pony up with the book because someone had requested it. I am so glad they did. I want to gush and go on and on about how this is very well may be my favorite of the books I’ve read this year, but I don’t want you to be turned off by it. The premise is simple, the last survivor from the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire of 1911 is on her death bed, and there are some long standing questions about her story and her recollection of the events of that tragic day. The way Weber weaves this story with her two main characters is incredible. The male lead is a composer who writes symphonic music based on genetic code, viruses and other natural occurring phenomena. The female lead is his lover, a geneticist and the granddaughter of the fire survivor. It wasn’t until after I finished it that I realized Weber had written the book the way a composer would write a symphony. There is an amazing use of repetition that at first bothered me, but then I began to see as totally brilliant, and later saw as quite possibly genius. I loved this book, people. I read it in a couple of hours and can’t wait to read it again. Highly, highly recommend.

Random Music - Shilling for ClearChannel

I just saw a thing on kottke about how a lot of Amazon’s MP3s are cheaper than iTunes, ten whole cents cheaper. I checked it out and they seem to have a decent selection, but some obvious artists are missing, sort of like when iTunes was starting out. I would switch to buying MP3s on Amazon if my boyfriend didn’t magically have a way to ‘get’ things for me. Especially, embarrassing things like Fergie songs.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to (and forcing Louie to ‘get’ for me) lately:

Young Folks by some nice young fellow named “Peter.” I think it’s a catchy tune, but to be totally honest with you, the only reason I’m listening to it is because it’s been on several of the embarrassing shows I watch. Gossip Girl. There, I said it, I LOVE GOSSIP GIRL.

Glamorous by Fergie. What is up with my new obsession with Fergie? I cannot figure it out, especially since whenever I hear this song I think, “Well, that pees-her-pants-girl sure has cleaned herself up.” I don’t know how to reconcile the fact that her voice sounds nothing like the way a pees-her-pants-girl’s voice would sound to me. I thought it would be huskier. Not so dainty.

Stronger by Kanye West. Kanye’s public persona has me a bit puzzled, with the weird pouting at random award shows, and after seeing pictures of his house, I’m convinced he’s got some serious rage issues to work out. I think that about anyone with white walls though. If you have white walls, you might be psychotic, unless your landlord won’t let you paint them, then your landlord is psychotic. But the song is fun. And Explicit!

The Way I Are by Timbaland. I think the first time I heard of Timbaland was when Missy Elliot was talking about how sad she was about Aliyah’s death and how Timbaland and Aliyah were her muses. I am still fuzzy about the world of the music producer, but it’s becoming much clearer now. I think music historians will look back on this time and talk about the rise of the music producer in celebrity, name recognition and power. This song makes me dance like a dork.

Say It Right by Nelly Furtado. I’m not so crazy about this song actually. But it’s the only reason there’s a glimmer of hope for John Mayer in my eyes. On “Best Week Ever” a couple of months ago, Mayer did a ‘remix’ of the Chocolate Rain song to the beat of this. Now whenever I hear it I laugh a little, and it warms my cold dead heart. (Also - guess who was the producer? Timbaland.)

Creep by Radiohead. I’ve been sad lately, and this is a sad, sad song. But I love it. It makes a liar out of me, because I claim I hate Radiohead, but this song rips me up. In the most awesome way. (I am fairly certain Timbaland has no tie to Radiohead. But you never know. You never. know.)

And finally - not available on Amazon:

Umbrella by Rihanna. I hated this song when I first heard it. Something about the way she sang Umbrella-ella-ella, really grated on me. But now since I’ve heard it covered in various ways, I really think the original holds up.

Jaw dropped open

I just read this in my headlines and flipped out a little. I can’t tell you how many times I crossed that stretch of freeway while I was living in Minneapolis. Holy. Crap.

Iocane powder

Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.

I made a batch of this shredded chicken with a few minor changes (I used chicken breasts on the bone, instead of serrano peppers I used a can of diced jalepeno peppers and instead of Taco Seasoning I used a teaspoon each of salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cumin, and coriander) and it is delicious if a bit spicy.

Yesterday, Louie saw me eating it and wondered why I hadn’t offered any to him. And I told him because it was so spicy that it gave me what might be considered an uncomfortable stomach condition akin to food poisoning, or that the chicken went bad and it was food poisoned. Since he has an aversion to spicy food and had been burned by food poisoning of the chicken variety previously (not by my doing, thankfully) he has steered himself far, far away from my delicious chicken.

My evil plan worked.

Links - ribbed for your pleasure

Zaki Gordon Speaker series at USC Podcasts - If you like hearing successful people talk about how they got successful, these are the podcasts for you. Especially if you are interested in screenwriting. I listen to them when I’m running and then get angry when I hear them repeat ‘their word’ over and over.  One guy’s word was ‘reductive.’

Animals Behaving Badly - Two words - Drunk. Monkey.

Marmaduke is an asshole - I’m sure you all know this one, but I was talking to someone last weekend who hadn’t heard of kottke - so there you go.

Lately

I’ve been reading Undead and Unwed which is delightful and a little porny and you know me, I’m not one to complain about dirty books.

It’s making room for Mouse Guard Volume One: Fall 1152 which is the first graphic novel I’ve ever requested. It’s apparently very popular so it took forever to get here.

Louie got it from Secret Headquarters. I met the owner of the shop at Louie’s show, delightful and totally able to carry on a conversation with a woman, shattering every stereotype I held dear about comic book people. Of course, we were talking about Science Fiction… so there’s that.

I’ve been gardening on my balcony.

Trying to figure out if composting is something I really can undertake. It seems hard. And I am all about easy. (Also the URL “journeytoforever” kind of creeps me out. Like if I compost I’m going to die. See you in heaven, worms!)

I continue to try and capture the beauty that is Lula, but am getting a little annoyed that black dogs are so difficult to photograph.

I continue to be frustrated with and addicted to Desktop Tower Defense. Do not click the link if you value quality time with your family.

And right this second I have Kyle XY paused on the Tivo. A friend used to work on the show, but she is on to bigger things now. Fingers crossed for her continued success. She deserves excellent things.

Have a good hump day!
